New wine haven and restaurant opened in Amsterdam: Chateau Amsterdam

Hey wine lovers, I’ve discovered a new spot I don’t want to keep from you. Especially if you also love wine (and I think there’s a good chance you do) and delicious Italian food (that chance seems pretty high too), this is definitely one to make a mental note of. Let me introduce you to: Chateau Amsterdam in Amsterdam-Noord.

‘Huh? Chateau Amsterdam, didn’t this already exist?’ – I can hear you thinking. Yes, Chateau Amsterdam, the Urban Winery as they call themselves, already existed, but they have moved to a really cool new location (measuring 3,000 m²!) and have added a great restaurant there with an open (Italian) kitchen, a large bar with tasting room, a huge terrace, a wine shop and, of course, the wine production area.

Chateau Amsterdam makes wine in the city

As soon as you step inside, you understand the name ‘Urban Winery’: the interior is very industrial, with a beautiful view of their tasting room from the bar area. That’s where all the wine is made, which you can then drink. There are 52 steel tanks, 4 concrete tanks and 25 oak barrels (for the real wine nerds: French and Austrian oak). A major plus: all the wines are also available by the glass. I started the evening with their ‘Orange is the new White’, a Macabeo with bubbles. Mega delicious.

On to the food

Where Chateau Amsterdam’s previous location was purely about making and drinking wine (which is absolutely fine too, of course), this new location also pays plenty of attention to food. The menu consists of Italian dishes. I should mention that many dishes are for adventurous eaters (such as beef heart or rabbit), but as someone who isn’t necessarily an adventurous eater, I really enjoyed the pappardelle (those long, wide ribbons of pasta) with slowly cooked oxtail. So delicious! Conveniently, there are plenty of options for vegetarians too, such as grilled radicchio with stracciatella and cannoli with ricotta.

In short: a new hotspot that is definitely worth visiting, whether you’re going for drinks or an elaborate dinner. You’ll find Chateau Amsterdam at Johan van Hasseltweg 51, less than 300 metres from their old Chateau. And be sure to try the piquette as an aperitif, as well as a glass of the Lucky Lucy (red). And go for that delicious orange wine called Orange is the new White too. Two more tips before I go: Chateau Amsterdam also has a shop selling the most beautiful culinary books, wine openers, wine bottles and more. And number two: you can also book an Urban Wine Tasting, during which you’ll be served seven glasses per person.

Chateau Amsterdam’s wines are available from, among others, Hema, Gorilla’s & Stach, but also directly, such as from the wine shop in Amsterdam-Noord and the Chateau Amsterdam webshop.
