Ore-gaa-no, pa-el-ja, tjo-ri-zo: when it comes to food and drink, there are plenty of tongue-twisters that keep discussions about hypercorrect pronunciation going nonstop. Nutella fans are no exception because, how exactly should you pronounce Nutella? Ferrero, the maker of Nutella, finally provides the definitive answer.
One of the founders of the delicious brown spread, Francesco Rivella, passed away not long ago (on Valentine’s Day, to be precise). When he worked as a chemist at food company Ferrero, he developed the recipe for the hazelnut and cocoa spread together with the company’s then-director, Michele Ferrero. The first jar of Nutella rolled off the production line in 1964 – and the rest is history.

Worldwide, it is still a huge hit on many a slice of bread, waffle, or simply straight from the jar. But how exactly should you pronounce the name? Ninety-nine percent of Dutch people undoubtedly pronounce it as Nú-tellá, and there are actually few other options. Things are slightly different in Britain. For years, people there have been discussing how the name of the chocolate spread should be pronounced. Nuh-tell-uh, new-tell-uh or nut-ella; it turns out that none of these are correct.

So how should you pronounce Nutella? Ferrero says the emphasis should be placed on the ‘n’ and the ‘ou’, so if you pronounce it correctly, it should sound like NOUtella. Which means that we (and probably you too) have been getting it wrong all this time.

But however you pronounce it, Ferrero really does not care in the slightest. The most important thing is that fans (yes, I’m one of them!) will continue spreading the brown (or white!) hazelnut chocolate spread forever.
