Oh no! French fries banned during the Olympic Games in Paris

During the Olympic Games in Paris, the world’s largest restaurant will open its doors in the Olympic Village. All kinds of delicacies will be served. True French classics, or non-French classics that are given a French twist. What the athletes definitely can’t order there? French fries.

Fire hazard
The organizers have a clear reason for not serving fries in the enormous restaurant: fire hazard. They don’t fancy turning on countless deep fryers in a space where 3,500 people can sit down to eat. And one more side note about this side dish: the ban applies only in this enormous restaurant. So athletes craving fries can sneak out of the restaurant too, in search of a chip stand. Or a McDonald’s.
Environmentally friendly
There are a few other notable things that won’t be on the menu. The French classic Boeuf Bourguignon, for example, will be served without beef. Instead, a vegetarian version of the dish will be made. No foie gras either, for ethical reasons. And there are no avocados. Um, aren’t those healthy and good for athletes?
That’s true, but the organizers of the Games are trying to make the event as sustainable as possible. Avocados don’t fit into that, because of their impact on the climate. The aim is not to fly anything in. But, as The Guardian writes, half a million bananas will be brought to Paris by boat.
No wine?!
The athlete who wants to toast their achievement in the restaurant won’t be able to do so with wine, at least. No wine will be served in the restaurant. That wouldn’t be appropriate, ”because it is a restaurant for the world’s best athletes”. So if you travel all the way from Japan, Brazil or Australia to Paris to taste French cuisine—or, um, deliver athletic performances—you won’t be able to get any wine there. I’d tack a holiday in France onto the end of it.
