Oh no: the price of oliebollen is going up this year too, of course
Are you one of the supporters or opponents of oliebollen stands appearing from mid-October? For some, the sight of such a stand at what feels like the end of summer causes annoyance; others cheer and, on their way to the kruidnoten aisle in the supermarket, pick up one, two or ten oliebollen to take home. But just like with so many other snacks and groceries, chances are you’ll pay more for oliebollen this year than ever before.
NOS reports that New Year’s Eve could be considerably more expensive this year because the prices of oliebollen are skyrocketing. In itself, you still have some time to save, but what if you’ve been treating yourself and others to such a deep-fried ball with powdered sugar since mid-October? Can you already feel it in your wallet?
Oliebollen even more expensive?
The oliebollen bakers featured in the news report are charging between €1.20 and €1.50 after their price increases, compared with last year’s usual prices of around €1.10 and €1.20. According to them, they have no choice, given the increased prices of just about all raw materials, packaging, gas and energy. They don’t expect the increases to go much further than this (“but never say never”), because otherwise people will think twice about visiting the oliebollen stand.
Prices could fall again too
One of the vendors says that if energy prices go down, he also wants to lower his prices again. But the prices of oil itself, as well as flour and powdered sugar, have also risen, and it remains to be seen when they will stabilize. Incidentally, they say they have not yet noticed fewer customers. Apparently, not everyone feels like dealing with dough, raisins (yes or no?) and frying fat at home, or, in the worst case, even with frikandellen to make an oliedel…
