After my trip through Thailand, Dutch food takes some getting used to again, to put it mildly. Luckily, in Amsterdam you hardly ever have to eat an AVG meal if you don’t want to. For good Thai food, there’s Snackbar Bird, a tiny restaurant on Amsterdam’s Zeedijk.

Steak salad
The steak salad is my favorite. With a Bird salad on my lap, I feel like I’m back in Thailand for a moment. Tender, juicy steak on a spicy salad whose flavor is defined by typically Thai ingredients such as kaffir lime (leaves), Thai basil and fish sauce. One big celebration.

Dish of the day
For ten euros, you can eat a dish of the day. The best day to buy such a meal is Saturday. That’s when they serve steak in red curry (Nua Pad Ped). And it’s fantastic. On Thursdays, they serve stir-fried noodles with chicken (Pad Thai Kai), the Thai signature dish. The portions are so large that two people can eat from one. Order some extra spring rolls and you’re guaranteed to leave satisfied.

Takeaway
As I said, the restaurant is particularly small. If you want to sit down, you often have to wait half an hour for a table. But believe me, it’s worth the wait. If you really don’t feel like waiting, you can also get takeaway.

Action Bronson
This American rapper also thought Bird was fantastic. The green curry and the vegetarian coconut soup changed his life, he says on his show F*CK THAT’S DELICIOUS by Munchies.
