Only in Germany: sushi with sausage

saarlandischer sushi

Sushi is always a much-discussed topic. For example, we eat it with chopsticks, but did you know that you’re actually supposed to eat it with your hands? Or that you’re actually not supposed to leave soy sauce behind? Or that some chefs hate it when you eat soy sauce with your sushi at all?

Personally, I’m in favor of the idea that everyone should decide for themselves (although I still think eating sushi with a knife and fork looks strange), but there are limits. And that limit has been reached. In Germany.

Saarländisches sushi really goes too far for me

In Saarland, Germany, they have invented their ‘own’ sushi, but I’ll pass on it for a moment if you don’t mind: it’s sushi with sausage. And not juicy bratwursts, either; petrol-station sausage in the most suspicious color you can imagine. And I can just about accept a maki with sausage inside… But this box also contains a futo maki with sausage instead of seaweed. WHY.

The photo went viral on Reddit, where people were just as disgusted by it as I was. Many thought this was an even greater food scandal than pineapple on pizza and spaghetti with ketchup. And I agree with them. Although I’m curious whether anyone would dare try this, so if you ever drive through Saarland and are feeling adventurous: would you please try it? And then send me a review. A full box of sushi costs only seven euros, so money doesn’t have to stop you…
