Oops: man misreads menu and orders a €360 steak

If you go to a Gordon Ramsay restaurant, you might as well make the most of it, of course. You don’t go for just a main course But you can overdo it, as a Reddit user discovered when he shared his story in the aptly named subforum TIFU: Today I Fucked Up.

What was the fuck up? The Redditor was dining out with his girlfriend in Atlantic City, for the first time since COVID hit the United States. Every reason to celebrate, then. So they made a reservation at Gordon Ramsay Steak at Harrah’s. Beautiful view over the water, a menu from one of the most famous chefs of all time… A perfect recipe for a great evening.
Best. Steak. EVER.
The man was craving a good piece of Wagyu, but was surprised to see that Japanese A5 Kobe beef—which is normally quite expensive—was cheaper. Hallelujah, praise the Lord! The Wagyu beef was $80 for 8 ounces (just over 220 grams), while the Kobe was ‘only’ $35 for 4 ounces (just over 110 grams). A simple calculation tells you that it saves you 10 dollars, for much better meat on your plate. DO IT!
The man is a big eater and ordered 12 ounces of the Kobe beef (around 340 grams). ‘The steak was amazing. I’m in my 40s and only had Wagyu before in my life, just twice. I had never had real deal Kobe. It was like nothing else you’ll ever have. Melt in your mouth delicious.’ He also added that he was still in disbelief that Wagyu was actually more expensive.
Check please!
And then the bill arrived. And yes, it was quite a shock. Of course, you know it won’t be a cheap evening… But he was presented with a bill of more than $600. Whut? What went wrong: the Japanese A5 Kobe was indeed $35… Per single ounce. So per 28 grams. Thirty-five. Dollars. With a minimum order of 4 ounces. And he had ordered twelve ounces. Well, it was only much later that he realized he had casually devoured a steak costing no less than 420 dollars (around 360 euros) Yes, today you definitely fucked up. But hey, at least he ate well.
