Oppo Brothers ice cream has 60% fewer calories and less sugar than other ice creams

Oppo ijsbollen

Love ice cream but not keen on the huge amount of sugar and calories? I know the feeling! That’s why I tried Oppo Brothers ice cream — winners of the British Great Taste Awards for low-calorie ice cream — and was pleasantly surprised.

My freezer is always full of ice cream. I don’t just enjoy a scoop of ice cream in summer, but all year round. Healthy? No. Fat, sugar… can’t that be done differently?

From Dragon’s Den (after all) to the supermarket

Yes, it can. Charlie and Harry Thuiller pitched their idea for ice cream with fewer calories and less sugar on the programme Dragon’s Den. They asked for an investment of £60,000 in exchange for a seven per cent stake in the company. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out, but…

Ice cream dream

In 2016, tennis champion Andy Murray tried Oppo and liked the ice cream so much that he decided to invest in the ice cream dream. He helped Oppo Brothers introduce the brand to more than 140,000 people, and Charlie and Harry soon managed to bring in the investment: more than £1.1 million flowed in through the Seedrs crowdfunding platform.

Double Salted Caramel Swirl and Double Chocolate Brownie

I don’t like light products at all and was somewhat sceptical. But the proof of the pudding is in the eating, so I tried two varieties: Double Salted Caramel Swirl and Double Chocolate Brownie. You immediately notice that the ice cream is less fatty and sweet (which means the tub is empty even faster..), but honestly: it was really delicious. Light products often have a somewhat bland or distinctly chemical taste, but fortunately that isn’t the case here. That’s probably also thanks to the high-quality ingredients used. (Available at Albert Heijn for €5.49).

Salted Caramel Snacking Balls

And there’s another Oppo variety you can happily bring home: the Salted Caramel Snacking Balls; salted caramel ice cream made with fresh milk and fresh cream, dipped in real Belgian milk chocolate in bite-sized form. And the best (and perhaps most surprising) thing of all: they contain just 20 calories per bite. (Available at Albert Heijn for €4.49).
