Prison sentence for foie gras? In New York, it can happen

It’s a fact: from 2022, New Yorkers will have to do without foie gras. On Wednesday, the city council approved a ban on the sale of foie gras in restaurants, supermarkets and specialty stores.

In February, we already wrote about it: councilwoman Carlina Rivera introduced a bill to ban the controversial French delicacy. She—and many others—believe that the way foie gras is produced (geese are sometimes force-fed to make their livers as large as possible) amounts to pure animal cruelty and is unacceptable. And the city council agrees with her. So: from 2022, selling foie gras will be prohibited.
Prison sentence
The punishment? Force-feeding? What comes around, goes around? No, not that. But violating the law could result in a fine of up to 2,000 dollars or even a prison sentence.
Pioneers
California banned the delicacy earlier, and the city of Chicago also had a ban in place for some time, until 2008.
