Recipe: churros from the Airfryer

As a ‘cookie’ with coffee, as a festive dessert with ice cream or as an original (and f*cking delicious) alternative to oliebollen: churros are fantastic. And good news: if you make them in the Philips Airfryer, they contain a lot less fat!

In Spain and Latin America, you’ll find churro stands on every street corner. No surprise, really, because they’re insanely delicious: warm, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, wonderfully sweet and perfect for topping with anything you like. The snack is also making its way into the Netherlands.
The only downside? These bad boys are deep-fried, and we all know what that means for your heart and blood vessels. Of course, as long as you eat them in moderation, there’s nothing to worry about, but why would you when you can choose an equally delicious, less fatty alternative? Exactly.
So here it is again. The answer to all your guilt-free fried-food cravings: the Airfryer. So simple, so good. This must be what heaven is like.
Right. Let’s get started. Here’s how to make churros from the Airfryer:
- Bring the water to a boil in a saucepan over medium heat.
- As soon as it boils, lower the heat and add the butter, salt and half of the sugar (50 grams) to the pan.
- Stir and wait until everything has completely dissolved/melted into the water.
- Add the flour and stir everything until well mixed.
- Remove the pan from the heat and let the mixture cool slightly.
- Then add the eggs to the mixture one at a time. Make sure each egg is fully incorporated before adding the next. The mixture may seem too firm or not smooth enough, but just keep stirring and mixing well.
- Smooth? Let the mixture cool until lukewarm. Then put it into a piping bag.
- Place greaseproof paper on a small plate, pipe strips onto it (long, short, round—whatever shape you want your churros to be) and freeze them for about 30 minutes so they become a little firmer.
- Then place the churro strips on the rack in the Airfryer (we use the Philips Airfryer XXL) and cook them for about 6 minutes. Test one. Is it still a little too soft for your taste? Cook them for a few extra minutes.
- Mix the other half of the sugar (50 grams) with the cinnamon in a bowl and roll the churros through it. Enjoy!
