Research shows: these supermarket own brands are the cheapest

The Dutch Consumers’ Association has once again examined the matter in meticulous detail: the striking results of an extensive study into which supermarket chain has the cheapest own brands are in. So where should you go if you’re looking for genuinely cheap own brands?

“Striking” is, incidentally, the word the association itself uses for the scores of the two stores known specifically as budget supermarkets: Lidl and Aldi…

These supermarkets have the cheapest own brands

At the top of the list of supermarket chains with cheap own brands is Dirk van den Broek. The Dutch Consumers’ Association compared the prices of the own-brand versions of more than a hundred basic products. And what did the prices at ‘budget’ supermarkets Lidl and Aldi show? They “score only average when it comes to the lowest-priced products,” according to the association. Aldi’s own brands are even at the same price level as (the own brand of) Albert Heijn. We didn’t see that coming!

This is where it gets expensive

According to the study, SPAR is the most expensive supermarket chain when it comes to own brands. You’re therefore better off avoiding it if you’re trying to keep your grocery spending within limits.

The gap continues to grow

The Dutch Consumers’ Association also sees that the differences between own brands and premium brands are growing. If you bought only own-brand products, you would by now be (on average) genuinely half as expensive. And if you also have some good budget recipes in your repertoire, such as dishes with chickpeas or eggs, this winter might hurt your wallet a little less. You’ve got this!
