10x our favorite cheap snacks from Dirk
Dirk van den Broek’s milk business grew over three-quarters of a century into a supermarket chain with more than 125 stores across the country. And it has to be said: every time, we’re once again amazed by the tasty—and especially cheap ass—snacks Dirk has. These are our favorites; do you know them all?
Garlic baguette
Bo: ‘It came out really well in our garlic baguette test, and honestly: my mouth is already watering when I think about Dirk’s garlic baguette. It’s deliciously soft, with lots of garlic flavor. Exactly what you want when you think of garlic bread. And seriously: you’re stealing from your own wallet if you don’t take one home (€0.48).’
Peanut butter
A little salty, a little bite, deliciously creamy. This peanut butter has it all—and yes, it also did very well in our supermarket peanut butter test. Also delicious as a snack on a corn or rice cake. Or sometimes just like this: grab a spoonful straight from the jar. A 350-gram jar costs €1.79.
Natural frites sticks
Chips: at the editorial office, we can’t get enough of them. These little crunchy French-fry chips are gone in no time. So here’s a tip: take two bags right away; they cost just €0.59 each.
Marshmallows
Who doesn’t love these? Soft, sweet marshmallows—we’ll happily get out of bed for them. A bag costs €0.69, but beware: you can easily eat yourself sick on them.
Cheese wafer balls
We love cheese, and we’re especially crazy about these cheese balls with their crispy crust. A pack of cheese wafer balls costs €0.88.
Cocktail snacks
Do we need to say more? A bowl full of pretzels, cheese biscuits and salty shapes is the ideal drinks snack. At parties, a bowl like this is always empty in no time—perhaps because it’s so deliciously corny? A bowl costs €0.96.
Vegetable spring roll
Hangover food to the max: you need to keep this vegetable spring roll in the freezer for the day after. A classic case of deliciously trashy, especially with sweet chili sauce; turn on the oven or deep fryer and you’re good to go. The vegetable spring roll costs €0.55 each.
Ice tea green
We can’t keep our hands off these salted cocktail nuts; they’re truly a dangerously moreish snack. At this price, you don’t need to hold back: €1.19 for a whole bag—bingo!
Bakers’ speculaas
Bo: ‘I always have this at home. Under the pretense of “in case someone comes to visit,” but who am I fooling? Before anyone has even set foot over the threshold, the pack is usually already empty. It costs just €0.79, which is really nothing for such heavenly biscuits.’
Butter cake
Baking a butter cake yourself isn’t difficult at all, but once you’ve tasted this delicious butter cake, which costs just €0.69, going into the kitchen yourself is frankly ridiculous. What a dream of a cake!
