AH Overblijvers Is Competition for Too Good To Go
Products that are almost past their best-before date, are being removed from the range, or fresh products that need to be eaten today or tomorrow: via the Too Good To Go app, you can collect these items from various supermarkets at a steep discount. Albert Heijn is running a pilot of a new app, AH Overblijvers, which works just like Too Good To Go.
Minke blogs on her website Gierige Gerda about saving money and cutting costs. She explains how the new app works. It is being tested in ten AH stores. You can buy a bag for €5 containing products worth €14.95 or more. A special version is available for vegetarians. A bag with bread and pastries is also offered for €3.95, filled with at least €11.95 worth of rolls, bread and sweet treats. And all of this is aimed at reducing waste and preventing food from being thrown away.
Pay Afterwards
Gerda compares Appie’s new initiative with Too Good To Go. The downside of that app: you pay in advance and only find out in the store what is in your bag. Of course, it may happen that the bag contains food you do not like, or products you are simply not very keen on. With Albert Heijn Overblijvers, it is different: you pay in the store.
A Great Bargain
The Too Good To Go app has been around for several years. At supermarkets such as Plus and Albert Heijn, as well as at bakeries, greengrocers and restaurants, you can pick up inexpensive meals or products that they will no longer be able to sell the next day. Too Good To Go really took off in Amsterdam; you had to be quick to take advantage of such a great bargain.
Ten Stores
The downside of Albert Heijn Overblijvers: it is a pilot, and you can only score such an affordable shopping bag at ten stores for now. If those stores are not near you, you are out of luck. But Gerda is optimistic: if we all download the app, Albert Heijn will surely roll it out nationwide, right? Besides, not all branches participate in Too Good To Go either.
