Roasting nuts in the microwave: super easy

Nuts in a meal or simply as a snack – when you roast them yourself, they’re even more delicious: crunchy, fresh, aromatic… yum! But really, who has the time or inclination on a standard weekday to preheat the oven for 10 minutes, then wait 15–20 minutes for the nuts in the oven while spending the last 3 minutes nervously wondering whether they’re just about to burn, and then stay away from them for another 10 minutes until they’ve cooled down?! No, you’d much rather do it this way.

Because they instantly make a salad much more appealing, add ‘crunch’ to your Turkish or Greek yogurt or oatmeal, and when roughly chopped they make ‘simple’ vegetables even tastier. And brownies, of course; wow, they’re amazing with crunchy walnuts in them! And with this tip, those nuts will be ready in no time…
Super tip
You can ‘roast’ nuts perfectly well in the microwave; did you know that? Roasted nuts have more flavor than raw ones, but many people don’t have the time or patience to devote half an hour to preparing them. If that applies to you too and you have a microwave, you should definitely try this tip from culinary website The Kitchn:
How to roast nuts in the microwave
Because food is cooked from the inside out in a microwave, it makes perfect sense that roasting nuts in it works well, since the outside won’t burn quickly before the inside has been nicely heated.
- Toss the nuts with a very small amount of neutral oil. 1/4 tsp should be enough for an amount that fits comfortably in the microwave.
- Spread them out in a single layer on a microwave-safe plate. (If you want to roast so many nuts that they don’t fit easily on a plate, you’d probably be better off using the oven and a baking sheet after all).
- Set the microwave to its highest power; 1 minute.
- Depending on your microwave and which nuts you’re using (and their size), it’s safest to check them after every minute; in total, they’ll need about 3–5 minutes.
- Break one open each time to test it: the outside won’t become as brown as it would in the oven, but what you want is for the nut inside to have become slightly more light brown, and especially for them to smell wonderfully ‘nutty’.
- Let them cool before processing them further.
- Stored in a properly airtight container, you can easily keep them for another month.
Easy peasy!
