Savory coffee is the coffee trend of 2025: what can you expect?

koffie-2025

It has been a favorite in the editorial office for years: Baileys iced coffee (and with this recipe, you’ll have it made in no time – also delicious when it’s cold outside!) But if we are to believe the trend watchers – and believe us, we do – we’ll soon all be drinking different coffee. Savory coffee, that is. What can you expect?

Let’s make one thing clear: we welcome the savory coffee trend with open arms. Because all that excessively sweet stuff? We hate it. During an average Starbucks visit, you can easily rack up five hundred calories. Truly unbelievable; these 5 famous coffees contain almost as many calories as a Big Mac!

Bulletproof coffee

But alongside those sweet coffees, there were also coffees with health claims (which we haven’t looked into for convenience’s sake), such as bullet coffee. Also known as bulletproof coffee – coffee with butter and coconut oil – it is mainly drunk in America. It is said to curb hunger. We have American Dave Asprey to thank for the coffee’s hype: while trekking through the Himalayas, he drank tea with yak butter (‘yak tea’). Dave recreated the drink in America, but with coffee instead – a huge success.

Coffee with… Jerusalem artichoke?

We’ll still have to see how long the craving for bulletproof coffee lasts, but that our desire for sweet coffee is going to change is no crystal-ball prediction. According to the NRC food trend report for 2025, we’re leaving sweet behind and heading toward savory. No one will raise an eyebrow anymore when you order cardamom coffee or avocado coffee. And if we are to believe The New York Times, Jerusalem artichoke coffee is the new matcha – in other words, the drink you’ll want to be seen with. Top chef Joris Bijdendijk saw this coming, because he came up with the dish of Jerusalem artichoke with coffee.

The taste of this savory coffee may take a huge turn to the left, but the price will probably remain the same: high. But hey, it can be done differently!

FavorFlav’s coffee blend

Would you like a mix of sweet and savory, but above all without any junk and with that heartwarming feeling? Then make the spice blend created by our own Sharon, who found the perfect addition to her cappuccino after some experimenting. Inspired by the Karak chai tea she drank in Oman (bucket-list material!) and her friend Vall. For this, mix equal amounts of cinnamon, cardamom and turmeric, half that amount of cloves, and double the amount of ginger. And don’t forget to add a little black pepper. Not for the kick – although that is certainly delicious – but because turmeric needs black pepper as an ally in your body to do its job.

Make a jar right away, so in the morning (and afternoon and evening..) all you have to do is stir a teaspoon into your cappuccino. This rich, velvety coffee is reminiscent of golden milk – and, like bulletproof coffee, is based on.. you guessed it: tea.
