Say what? There’s now special cola to go with fried chicken
No, we’re not going to reignite the Pepsi versus Coca-Cola debate here. Not least because this is also, and I quote, a combination with a very ‘peace-loving’ dish! So what has Pepsi released specifically to drink with fried chicken? Special cola, yep!
This new Pepsi variant has properties developed to make the cola go even better with fried chicken…
Seriously good karaage
Or rather, we should say with karaage, Japan’s fried chicken, because that’s where this special cola is exclusively available. In the Netherlands, you can sometimes find karaage on the menu too, but in Japan it’s truly a much-loved bar snack or part of a bento box, which is basically the advanced version of a lunchbox.
Not all chicken is created equal
By the way, did you officially know there’s a difference between fried chicken and karaage? For karaage, the chicken is seasoned before being rolled in flour, while with other types of fried chicken, it’s generally only the flour that is seasoned.
Cola with fiber (??)
But back to the cola, because that’s what we came for. First of all, this special cola is transparent (whuutt?), contains no sugar (because you’ll be getting those calories from the fried chicken), tastes less sweet than regular ‘zero’ Pepsi so the flavor of the karaage comes through better, and contains dietary fiber (yes, really) to help balance out the chicken’s high fat content a little.
Only in Japan, but secretly, we’re actually very curious…
