Seriously antisocial: this is the world’s most expensive takeaway meal
I’m happy to spend money on quality. Whether it’s a piece of clothing or a wagyu sandwich. But I can also get seriously aggressive when something is totally overpriced. Asking eight hundred dollars for a takeaway menu? Get real!
I already find that amount absurd under any circumstances, but to ask for it sans gene during the coronavirus pandemic, in a country where more than 22 million people are now unemployed… and in a city — New York — where people are dropping like flies and they can’t even store the coffins properly: I find it unbelievably antisocial. But America’s famous and also most expensive restaurant, Masa, is actually doing it.
Masa = cha-ching
Sushi restaurant Masa, run by chef Masa Takayama, is the pinnacle of decadence. A scoop of ice cream: 45 dollars. Maki sushi: 240 dollars. Grilled shrimp: 60 dollars. That sort of thing. And now Masa, which, like every restaurant, had to close its doors because of the coronavirus, is selling 20 boxes of sushi or sashimi every Friday, at a price of 800 dollars each.
You still have to prepare it yourself
One box can feed four people. The first box contains sliced raw fish, vegetables, ginger, wasabi, soy sauce, nori and rice. For 200 dollars per person, you still have to assemble it yourself. But hey, you obviously have plenty of time for that now, right? The box is, incidentally, cheaper than a typical omakase (simply put: the chef’s menu) at Masa. That costs around 600 dollars per person. That’s without drinks and tax, though, which means you’ll quickly end up paying 1,500 dollars.
GoFundMe?!
What bothers me even more is the appeal on Masa’s website, asking for financial contributions to Masa (and the group’s other restaurants) via GoFundMe. Thanks to affluent clientele, more than 84,000 dollars has now been donated. If only the smaller neighborhood restaurants that fed tens of thousands of people every year had been that lucky…
