What do you do with the world’s most expensive banana? Eat it, of course!

Have you ever eaten something and thought afterward, “that wasn’t worth the price?” I’m curious whether crypto entrepreneur Justin Sun feels that way after eating an overripe banana worth—hold onto your hat—$6.2 million!

Sun paid almost €5.9 million for Comedian by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. Also known as the ‘artwork’ featuring a banana taped to a wall. In 2019, the taped-up banana was exhibited at Art Basel Miami Beach and auctioned for $120,000. An insane amount even back then, but in the meantime it has multiplied several times over.
Taped-up banana
A banana held to the wall with a piece of tape. Real art or good marketing? Either way, auctioneer Oliver Barker didn’t expect it to sell for $6.2 million either. Bidding started at $800,000. “Don’t let it slip away..”, Barker said. He never expected to say the words ‘Five million dollars for a banana’ either. It’s not just a mega-deal for the artist; auction house Sotheby’s is also keeping $1 million from the sale.
The line between art and perversity is thin. Hopefully the banana tastes all right. And do you have an overripe banana lying in your fruit bowl? Then make banana bread with it. We’re also sharing the ingredient that makes your banana bread even more delicious.
