Slovenia: gastronomic destination 2021!

slovenië culi bestemming

Now that we can cautiously start thinking about travelling (we were already fantasising, of course, about the most delicious food in different countries), let’s start with countries that are easy to reach by car. Slovenia, for example! And the fact that it has also been named gastronomic destination for 2021 is an added bonus.

The official title of the award is European Region of Gastronomy 2021 and was awarded by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT). Slovenia had to prove that there were enough gastronomic projects in development to meet the requirements, as well as programmes to ensure that the title could be extended, reports travel site The Lonely Planet. The panel that awarded the prize will assist Slovenia in continuing to meet the conditions. And is it surprising that the country received this honour?

Top destination

Not really, we think. Slovenia is small but has an extremely varied landscape (mountains, forests and a small stretch of coastline), and its beautiful natural surroundings are reflected in its food culture. Many chefs have close ties with small local suppliers, and wild ingredients are eagerly foraged. They also make incredibly delicious wine in Slovenia! “Extremely affordable, high-quality red and especially white wines that excel in their freshness and fruity flavour,” our wine expert and editor-in-chief Sharon once wrote.

Going green

In line with the international award, the Slovenian tourism board has announced the introduction of a new Slovenian Green Cuisine label, allowing destinations and hospitality businesses that operate sustainably to distinguish themselves. A website was also launched describing the country’s gastronomic culture and featuring the stories of various innovative chefs. You can view it by clicking this link. So if you fancy stunning nature and gastronomic delights (which, as far as we’re concerned, also includes a picnic with some wonderful local cured ham and a bottle of their finest furmint), then you know what you’ll be doing this summer! Hit the road to Slovenia!
