Smurf Wine
Everyone is suddenly talking about blue wine. Now that this coloured liquid is even seeping through our – deliberately fitted – FavorFlav blinkers, we can no longer ignore it either. But seriously… blue? Didn’t we already have Blue Curaçao for that? Or some kind of Breezer?
Blue wine is an ordinary wine, made bright blue by adding colourants. Usually fresh, fruity and a little sweet in flavour. There’s nothing wrong with it if you like it, but they’re certainly no great wines. Still, it’s already on the menu at many Dutch hospitality establishments, and in some places it’s even a hit. Because it looks so summery. And because it reminds people of the sea.
Pretty impressive
Admittedly, it looks radiant and it’s pretty impressive how it’s made. But all I can think of when I see it is Smurf ice cream (which, incidentally, gets its colour from an E-number associated with frightening allergic reactions).
Fortunately, the blue in the wine is indeed of natural origin. These are plant-based colourants added to the – originally white – wine. These so-called anthocyanins come from sun-dried skins of blue grapes, but sometimes also from the skins of cherries and plums, for example. Nothing chemical, then, but it doesn’t taste like anything at all either. It’s mainly a funny phenomenon. Great if you’re throwing a party, or if you’re going to live in a mushroom.
