Snackpert tries Albert Heijn’s new party snacks: ‘The spinach mozzarella empanada is one of the nastiest snacks I’ve eaten in ages’

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his life, suspects there is more mayonnaise than blood in his body, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav. This week, among other things, he tried Albert Heijn’s new party snacks. An unequivocal success.

Vegetarian empanada by the Vegetarian Butcher, AH To Go

I think this is new at AH To Go, right? The vegetarian empanada by the Vegetarian Butcher. I expected it to be vegan, but no, it contains eggs. Oh well! Personally, I wasn’t a huge fan of the same producer’s frozen empanadas either, partly because they were small and not very flavourful, but this veggie snack is really good! Like the delicious sibling of your ex. Or something. The empanada is very generously filled with sweet vegetables (bell pepper and corn), black beans that, thank God, aren’t too mushy, and the tomato purée gives it a wonderfully creamy flavour in your mouth, as if it were French-kissing at Pinkpop 2022. So, finally: a really tasty veggie snack for the train, although the fact that it’s more expensive than a frikandel roll is kind of weird too. Anyway. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Jamie Oliver burger from Charlie’s Burger 33, Amersfoort

The number of times you’ve tipped me off to order a burger at Charlie’s Burger 33 in Amersfoort can be counted on not 1, not 2, not 3, but definitely 4 hands. And yes, just to get away from your enthusiasm, I finally went there to eat. I chose the Jamie Oliver burger (no idea what that good man has to do with the burger), made with onion, mozzarella, chorizo, red onion compote and sun-dried tomato. I made things easy for myself, because these are some of my favourite ingredients. But to give this place its due: while the average burger joint doesn’t really dare to experiment with flavours, Charlie’s does — their menu is longer than the average setlist of a band that has released only one album. The burger is genuinely delicious too, although the meat could have been better. Because the patty is so thick, it isn’t as tender as the best burger I’ve ever had. One solution would be to cut the patty in half and cook the two halves separately. That would make it more tender. Maybe something for next time. But above all: I enjoyed it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

New party snacks from Albert Heijn
New tapas at Appie, ohohohohoho! Or well, to what extent can you call these tapas? Party snacks, then. Let’s stick with that. I tried all of them again and reviewed them in completely random order.
The chicken cordon bleu balls! In other words: chicken balls with cheese inside. Melted cheese in your mouth is incredibly sexy, perhaps even sexier than… well, never mind. But I think the execution is pretty good. Nice and tender, the cheese is prrrrrima (don’t expect an expensive cheese flavour, but really, what do you expect from a supermarket snack), and you can simply serve these at any old drinks party with cocktail tables where everyone stands around awkwardly. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The pulled-pork empanadas! A bit like being the last person left on the dance floor while someone else is still there too, and you want to make out no matter what. Fine, then. Nothing special, okay meat, but in my opinion they could have been filled better. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

The spinach mozzarella empanada is honestly one of the nastiest snacks I’ve eaten in ages. The spinach is so wet and so overpowering that you can’t taste the mozzarella anywhere. It’s just as awful as spending an entire day at the office with a piece of spinach stuck to your tooth while sitting across from your crush. Sooooo horrible. ⭐️

Luckily, we end with a lovely snack: the Spanish mini chistorras (small spicy sausages) are juicy, spicy and flavourful. I would have liked them to be a touch more tender, but that’s the only thing. Very successful. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
