Snackspert has a great tip: Albert Heijn to go’s new toasted sandwich

Tosti Old Amsterdam

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his life, suspects there’s more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week. This week, Eke ate a 5-star burger in Paris and tried the new toasted sandwich to Go.

Old Amsterdam toasted sandwich from Albert Heijn to GO

An Old Amsterdam toasted sandwich! Yes, whether it’s actually aged cheese is debatable, but one thing is certain: it tastes good. Think of Kwekkeboom’s Old Amsterdam bitterballen, one of the best supermarket snacks ever. And now AH to Go is also making use of the popular cheese brand: a proper toasted sandwich! And that’s great, because eating a toasted sandwich on the train is just as enjoyable as a Robijn commercial. Make sure you bring enough napkins, because after eating it your hands are just as sticky as a horny person who has just finger-painted (is that a word). Sorry, I’m getting sidetracked. In my opinion, the edges of the sandwich are genuinely a little too hard, making a visit to the dental hygienist unavoidable. But! Once you get past the edges, you have a deliciously gooey toasted sandwich with cheese that’s wonderfully creamy and soft on both the inside and the top. I don’t understand the jalapeño on top, though; its flavour is just as absent as face masks on public transport these days. A toasted sandwich with plenty of plus points and a few minuses—in other words: a very, very, very solid pass. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Vegan Easter frikandel bites from Albert Heijn

We’ve lived through a pandemic, but apparently things can get even worse, people, because never, and I really mean never, did I expect to come across vegan Easter bunny frikandel bites on the shelves at Appie. I honestly don’t think anyone in the world would come up with something like this, so I’d really like to know who thought of it. Is it art or kitsch? That’s the question. But let’s just talk about the taste: it’s nowhere near that of a frikandel. Admittedly, the texture and mouthfeel are really well done, but there’s very little flavour. Where are the frikandel spices, such as onion powder? Didn’t come across them. It’s as if you put 1 spoonful of apple juice in a glass of water and then served it as apple juice. Easter has never been this tasteless. ⭐️⭐️

Smash burger from Dumbo, Paris

Instagram may take this post down because good grief, this burger from Dumbo in Paris has so much porn going on that even Pornhub would buckle under the horniness of this bun. Because guys, my goodness, this is seriously the best smash burger (read: a simple, thin burger with nothing more than cheddar, meat, pickle, mustard and tomato sauce) I’ve ever eaten in Europe. And you know what makes the difference? The bun is cooked along with the burger and has a crispy crust that demands a respectful “sir.” Every bite feels like a crackling moment of happiness. And then the rest—the meat and the aforementioned ingredients, that is—is cooked perfectly. So you can’t conclude anything other than that perfection exists. Just take the train to Paris. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
