Snackspert has made up his mind: this is the best döner in Amsterdam and perhaps the whole of the Netherlands

beste döner van Amsterdam

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his lifetime, suspects there is more mayonnaise than blood in his body, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav. This time, he gives a sandwich döner the maximum score.

Beste Döner, Dappermarkt in Amsterdam

We’ve found it: the best döner in Amsterdam and perhaps the whole of the Netherlands. The search can end; this is simply it. Beste Döner at the Dappermarkt—the name says it all—has the best döner. I don’t know what the brilliantly moustached owner does, but the lamb döner sandwich really is like a 9–0 victory over your arch-rival. The wonderfully soft bread, reminiscent of the finest pillows ever, filled with exceptionally tender lamb, plenty of (mild) garlic sauce that you hope will linger in your mouth for another 24 hours… and then those onions, gently cooked in a kind of sweet tomato sauce that is present in small amounts—and therefore not overpowering. This is craftsmanship: the way he carefully tops the sandwich, the way he handles the sauce so neatly—everything is just right. The best, that Beste Döner. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Curry mayonnaise from de Zaanse

curry mayonnaise from de Zaanse

Perhaps the Gaston of the Postcode Lottery of sauces: curry mayonnaise from de Zaanse. The flavor comes in like a postcode jackpot, but you still haven’t decided how delicious it really is. I’m torn, because I think it works very well as a curry sauce, but to what extent can you still call it mayonnaise? I miss the creaminess, something that competitor Oliehoorn’s Brander Mayonnaise does have—although that one mainly consists of more mustard, but the comparison has to be made. On the other hand, it’s certainly tasty, especially when you’re eating fried fish. It isn’t exactly a real showstopper, though. But then again, is that a problem? ⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½

Mini hamburgers from Albert Heijn

mini hamburgers from Albert Heijn

Hamburgers at a discount, oh oh oh oh hoooooo—yes, that was a fun commercial, but good grief, 6 euros for 9 tiny mini hamburgers with nothing but a mini burger, cheese, and sauce on them? And the sauce is just as present as the chemistry between Nick & Simon on Jinek. Minimal, in other words. Come on, do something crazy, or add an extra-tasty topping. The bread is fine, and so is the meat, but every bite feels so unnecessary. You can hear your stomach shouting that these are superfluous calories and that you’d be better off popping into the snack bar around the corner. And yes, they may be drinks snacks, but you simply don’t serve this. It’s the little plate of cubes of cheese with a flag stuck in them, but at the Friday afternoon drinks. Unfortunately, cheddar cheese. ⭐️
