Snackspert Is Disgusted by Jumbo’s Vegetarian Sausage Rolls

Vega worstenbroodjes jumbo

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his life, suspects there’s more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav. This time, Snackspert is disgusted by Jumbo’s vegetarian sausage rolls and shares a few go-to tips for a weekend in Naples.

Jumbo’s Vegetarian Sausage Rolls

There are many good alternatives to meat available these days, but sometimes things go wrong. Look, the ideal vegetarian(vegan) frikandel hasn’t been found yet, but at Jumbo I discovered another product that has failed spectacularly. Given the fact that Beyond Sausages are absolutely delicious, I expected a vegetarian sausage roll to be perfectly fine. Quite the opposite. It’s unbelievably disgusting. It’s an insult to all the people of Brabant here in the Netherlands, and that’s strange, because you expect much more from a Brabant supermarket like this. The vegetarian sausage tastes so bad, so intensely of soy, that it’s more reminiscent of Rasputin’s shrivelled dick in a jar of alcohol than an actual sausage roll. If you’re standing in the supermarket and see the packaging of these vegetarian sausage rolls, give them a very wide berth. ⭐️

Must-Visits in Naples

Save this list if you’re going to Naples for a weekend soon (or ever), because the city is full of beautiful places. And the best thing is: I feel like I still have a hundred places to discover. So far, these are my favourites:
1. Pizzeria Da Attilio – known from the Netflix series Ugly Delicious; in my opinion, these are the best pizzas ever. Order the diacola or the carnavale, absolutely heavenly
2. Antica Pizza Fritta da Zia Esterina Sorbillo – one of the Sorbillo family’s establishments, but if you’re going to eat pizza frittata anywhere, do it here. The ricotta and mortadella are unbelievably delicious. And those little bacon bits in between, yum.
3. Tandem Ragú – the best ragù ever. What absolutely delicious pasta — and lots of vegetarian(vegan) options too!
4. Café Mexico – start your day with a smile at Café Mexico, with delicious coffee (sorry, not very Snackspert, but I really want to recommend this, let me)
5. Rosticceria Vaco e Presse – next to Mexico is this sandwich shop, where I ordered a 30 cm-long sandwich with ham and tomato. Fantastic.
6. Ba-Bar la Nova Central – the Primitivo there was so delicious that we ordered a second bottle.
7. Panino Napoletano – wherever you are, get one of these sandwiches. Just like the frittatina (a kind of pasta omelette)
8. A Cucina Ra Casa Mia – authentic Neapolitan food at a trattoria? Without any other tourists? Then this place is perfect for you. Definitely order the melanzane alla parmigiana; it was out of this world.
9. The gnocchi at that same restaurant is so filling that you can order a stomach pump straight afterwards.

Lidl’s Sauerkraut and Smoked Sausage Roll

A sauerkraut and smoked sausage roll from Lidl, would you believe it! And compared with the one from the big blue competitor whose name rhymes with Kwalbert Pijn, this one is much more appealing to look at. The taste is better too: the balance between sauerkraut, mustard and meat is spot-on here. The only downside is the dough, which is too firm and too thick, making it seem as though you first need to hire a few construction workers before you can get to the meat. One more thing: the sausage is just as thin as a small frikandel. I don’t really think that suits a smoked sausage. So yes, good flavour, but there’s still plenty of room for improvement. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
