Snackspert is extremely enthusiastic about the Philly Cheesesteak

De Philly cheesesteak

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his life, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav. This week’s edition is certainly not lacking in the necessary fat. But man, that Philly cheesesteak, Mexicanobroodje and fries with mayo are delicious.

Philly cheesesteak from The Cheesesteak Factory, Amsterdam

The Philly cheesesteak may have the nastiest appearance of them all, but it’s always delicious. However, if you look at the photo above for just a little too long, you’ll start to find it disgusting. That’s why I recommend approaching The Cheesesteak Factory’s Philly cheesesteak with your eyes closed and diving into it mouth-first. But jokes aside: this is one excellent sandwich. I once had the good fortune of eating a real one in Philadelphia, and this one definitely comes close. No wonder, since the rolls are made by old-school, true-blooded Americans. Delicious. The meat is wonderfully juicy, the onions beautifully fried, and the roll nice and soft, but I found the cheddar cheese sauce a little too bland. You can also opt for young matured cheese, but I thought, hey, I want to imagine I’m in America for a moment. No, that cheddar cheese sauce didn’t seem homemade—if it is, then my apologies, and at the same time: DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!! A blemish on this delicious sandwich, because otherwise it was perfect. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Mexicanobroodje from Spar

A seriously underrated snack: the mexicano. Once invented during the qualifying rounds for the football World Cup in Mexico, and thank goodness it stuck around. But it has never managed to rise above the frikandel, kaassoufflé and kroket, but that’s not a problem. I do want to point out that the Mexicanobroodje truly deserves eternal life. I’ve had it at AH To Go before, and it was already great then, but Spar makes an even better one. This is insane. The spiciness of the mexicano, not too intense, wrapped in a bread roll. With a lovely spicy, curry-like sauce. En-joy. The only downside is that, unlike the snack-bar version, the mexicano is considerably smaller. I would have liked to see it in its original size. But anyway, size doesn’t matter, right? Right?! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½

Fries with mayo from De Frietzaak, Den Bosch

I had to choose between Eetbar de Stadt and Frietzaak in ’s-Hertogenbosch, but because my stomach was about as full as an average episode of White Lotus, I felt compelled to ‘just’ get some fries. Fries with mayo, why not. And yes, I wanted some with beef stew, but unfortunately it hadn’t been made yet. At that point, you shouldn’t think in terms of problems, but solutions. And that’s why you quickly have to make peace with your second choice: fries with mayo. But honestly: they were very good. I’m definitely someone who likes sauce in a separate container, but don’t forget that I also tolerate people who simply put sauce directly on their fries. Everyone is different, right? So we’re still heading toward a lovely Christmas spirit after all. But jokes aside, Frietzaak makes very good crispy fries, but for a small portion of fries with mayo, I think 3.75 euros is just a little too much. It wasn’t exactly a lot, so yes, in expensive times, that is a downside. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
