Snackspert raves about KFC’s Double Stacker

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has already devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his life, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav. This time, Snackspert raves about KFC’s Double Stacker and the Janana Burger, but is less enthusiastic about the Cheezy Baconator from Hungry Jake.

KFC’s Double Stacker

Some people have never seen The Lion King, never watched a football match in a stadium, or never ironed a shirt, but until now I had never had the Double Stacker at KFC. In this case, the Zinger Double Stacker, because I like spicy food, just like Aunt Ina likes spicy hairstyles. Unfortunately, it’s not available in a vegetarian version yet, because then I would have written a review of that too, but oh well. Unlike most fast-food burgers, this Zinger Double Stacker is actually really, really good? The chicken is genuinely hot inside, meaning it was fried quite recently, the cheese in the middle and underneath the burger is actually melted, and the supercharger sauce (read: spicy mayonnaise) is also nice and creamy. And that spicy chili sauce on top—brilliant. The only disappointing thing about KFC is the bun itself: it’s soft and dry, whereas it could really be a bit stickier. But still, for a fast-food chain, this is a pretty decent burger. Very nice! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Janana Burger, Amsterdam

So many curious and enthusiastic reactions to my Story last Saturday that I feel compelled to write the review of Janana Burgers’ smash burger in Amsterdam West right away. Hey, no problem—at least Steven Bergwijn always scores when asked to do so—eh, no, never mind. Anyway. I am very, very enthusiastic about Janana. While most people nowadays go to Maijard for their smash burger, true enthusiasts go to this place. Unpretentious, without any frills. No weird interior, no conceptual nonsense—wonderful. First of all: the milk bun is divine. Soft, but creamy too. The horseradish aioli does to your mouth what a Rituals fragrance stick does to a bathroom. Or something. You know what I mean. Creamy, but also slightly sharp and sour in flavor. The meat (two patties!) is wonderfully tender; the only downside (of all this) is that the outside could have been a little juicier too. But otherwise: truly heavenly. This burger makes my top three in the Netherlands (The Beef Chief is still the best)—really impressively done. Hats off! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½

Hungry Jake’s Cheezy Baconator, Hilversum

Hello, Hilversum! It was about time I tested something here again, wasn’t it? I was alerted several times to the existence of Hungry Jake, a burger joint in the city center. And yes, although the prices are definitely a lot better than in the average Randstad area, I have to say that the standard is also slightly lower. I ordered the Cheezy Baconator and have a few things to say about it. First of all: do something about the bun. A sesame bun? Nah, don’t. A brioche or potato bun would be better, if you know what I mean. And it was barely cooked in the meat fat either—a missed opportunity. Sorry to start off so sour, but in 2023 I do think it’s about time for a higher standard. But to be fair, the meat is fine. Not as tender as I would ideally like, but well salted and well seasoned. A major plus is the bacon, which has been chopped into pieces and spread throughout the burger. I already find that so much better than one stiff slice of bacon that is barely possible to bite through. And so the bacon pieces are neatly bathing in the melted cheddar and barbecue sauce—really great. In this way, the burger saves itself and still earns a respectable passing grade. But there is work to be done for Hungry Jake. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
