Snackspert review: metchup

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his life, suspects that there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and normally shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week.

Vlambapao, Topking
You have to be consistent, because otherwise there’s no logic and nobody can follow you anymore. So when I reviewed Lidl’s frozen bapaos a month ago and then gave them 5 stars, I felt that they couldn’t be topped. In terms of supermarket bapaos, that is—let’s make that clear. But guys, I’ve found even better ones at the supermarket: Topking’s vlambapaos. Holy shit. Flames. And do you know why? Because they’re so incredibly well-filled. Not like a bag of crisps, but there’s simply a lovely amount of filling in that ball of dough. Just check my Story and you’ll see what I mean. And I haven’t even mentioned the taste yet: wonderfully creamy and nicely spicy. Not too hot, but more the kind of heat you feel when you’re sitting in the sun at 25 degrees. Honestly, what a delicious bapao. And because Lidl got 5 stars, I’m being generous again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Syrian flatbread with lamb shawarma, Tigris & Euphrates

I don’t often eat Syrian food, but apparently the place to eat/order Syrian food is Tigris & Euphrates in Amsterdam-Oost. My friends have recommended it several times, as have some of you here, so what do you do? Listen. Because yes, food tips are the best tips you can give. And they were right. What you see in the first photo is the Syrian flatbread with lamb shawarma. And boy, does it have an intensely deep flavor. Perhaps a little too intense because of the sumac—you even need to take a sip of water—but it’s absolutely delicious in combination with the pickle and bell pepper inside. Oh, yum, it’s as if I’m getting a belly dance, and not a belly dance by a beautiful woman but a literal dance in my belly, you know what I mean. Dancing with happiness. The other dishes, the spinach triangle and the baba ghanoush bite, are fine, although next time I’d gladly swap them for another flatbread dish. Fortunately, I now have a reason to order again. Win-win. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Metchup, Van Wijngaardens Zaanse

When I was tipped about this in my DMs a few times, I thought: need to have it. Yes, this really couldn’t wait. But only after searching the supermarket a few times did I finally find it at Jumbo! The metchup. What a laugh. Sounds like the best of both worlds, as if you’re going to deep-fry a frikandel roll, but unfortunately I have to disabuse you: it’s a disappointment. I was really expecting a beautifully produced combination, but this is nothing more than a simple double penetration. Zaanse mayo together with Zaanse ketchup in one bottle. Well, I could do that too. And I’m not even that fond of that ketchup, although I am a fan of the mayonnaise. But no, I was hoping for a special ‘metchup’, not two products in one bottle. Sadly, mayokaas. ⭐️⭐️
