Snackspert: “With every bite you think: hello, delicious flavor”

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has already devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his life, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and normally shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week. But because hospitality entrepreneurs are having a hard enough time as it is these days, and we could all use a little positivity, he will only be sharing his recommendations for the time being. Nice, right?

Seriously heavenly
Black Angus sausage roll, Kwekkeboom

If Kwekkeboom’s sausage roll is the Arjen Lubach of sausage rolls, then the average supermarket sausage roll is the RUMAG OF.SAUSAGE.ROLLS.BYE no, just kidding, but to get straight to the point: the black Angus sausage roll from this pastry chef in Amsterdam is truly heavenly. It has been a classic among Amsterdammers for years, and I’ve only just tried it now, but better late than never—just like my shoelace-tying certificate, which also came far too late. Anyway. Why is it so delicious? Because the puff pastry is wonderfully crisp but also crumbly. The seasoned mince in the roll isn’t a very firm substance, but rather generously spread out. With every bite you think: hello, delicious flavor. And “hello, delicious flavor” is what I often say when I have something delightful in my mouth. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Broodje Hans, Smoked Crispy Bacon Sandwich House

If the song ‘Ik **** Je Op Afstand’ goes viral, then you know that from now on, things can really only happen at a distance. But making an impact doesn’t necessarily have to happen via FaceTime. There are multiple ways to make an impact. You can also do it with this Broodje Hans. You can get it in the Jordaan, at a place formerly known as De Kaasboer. It has now been given a tourist-friendly name: Smoked Crispy Bacon Sandwich House, which makes it even more cult-like than it already was. It’s an experience. Broodje Hans is a sandwich made by Hans—you couldn’t make it up—and when I ordered it, it was indeed made by Hans. ‘I’m going to make you a delicious sandwich,’ he said when I ordered it. Fuck me, he was right. This sandwich, topped with spicy Italian salami, young cheese, tomato, pepper and arugula, causes quite an explosion in your mouth. First of all: that salami is genuinely next level. Never before has my mouth been so on fire from salami, and it felt so good, as if you were having an exotic night in which you discover that you like things that feel strange but are also rather delicious. It explodes. Really explodes. The sandwich is nicely crisp, but certainly not stale. The tomato and arugula provide a tiny bit of freshness and balance; the cheese fades somewhat into the background thanks to the spicy salami, but that doesn’t matter. Because I want more. I want to make an impact again. And at a distance, no less. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Chicken bapao, Lidl
The search is over, guys. It’s done. After I reviewed yet another disappointing bapao a few weeks ago, I received several messages from you telling me to try the bapao from Lidl’s freezer. And yes, Churchill once said that democracy is the least bad system, but thanks to you, I believe in it again. Because you’re right. Although it really isn’t any better than the bapao you can get at the toko, this is one that us silly Dutch people can simply buy at a completely ordinary supermarket and eat as if we’ve been going without for seven months. Because wow, this bapao is delicious. And here’s why: the meat is succulent. Holy shit. What a difference compared with all the other refrigerated bapao. The chicken flavor is good and somehow reminds you of shawarma, so there’s a chance you’ll suddenly reach for a bottle of garlic sauce; the meat is tender and juicy. An excellent bapao, then. Not the best ever, because you get that at the toko, but this is a good (cheap) alternative. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
