Snackspert’s week: ‘Deep-fried halloumi, PICK ME UP.’

Snackspert – Sababa halloumi friet header

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has already devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his lifetime, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week.

Better than pleasure

Frikandel roll from Plus

Not Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty or Snow White is the most beautiful fairy tale there is to me, but the fairy tale of Mitchell from 4HAVO, his frikandel roll and his energy drink. There is no better one, believe me. I recently went to Plus again and remembered that I had never tried their frikandel roll! And I have to admit: that’s quite a shame, because it’s simply excellent. I have to say I like the one from Albert Heijn best, but the one from Plus comes close. A bit like Joop Zoetemelk of frikandel rolls, if you know what I mean. Or, to make it even clearer, the Netherlands national team at the World Cup of frikandel rolls. The undisputed second-best. The pastry is good, the frikandel is still nice and warm, and the amount of curry is spot on. Very good! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Combo deal: pita and halloumi fries from Sababa

When a few Dutch people start an Israeli place with lots of pitas, I’m initially skeptical; just leave that to the people who actually come from there, but after visiting Sababa on Kinkerstraat in my beloved Amsterdam Oud-West, I really have to revise my opinion. I’d rather be a hypocritical dick than a liar, as I always say. At Sababa I ate this delicious falafel pita, containing several pieces of pickled cucumber, which makes me incredibly happy. Add delicious spinach, pomegranate and tomatoes, and I’m very satisfied. The hummus with tahini sauce could use a little more kick in my opinion; that’s how you really make it excellent, as far as I’m concerned. But hey, this one is genuinely successful. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

But the absolute best things at Sababa are both the halloumi fries and the sweet potato fries. Deep-fried halloumi, PICK ME UP. What a delicious bite, and those sweet potato fries are unbelievably crispy too. The best in Amsterdam, no joke. You can go on Pornhub and watch Fake Taxi on a boring day, but what if you can eat this too? Exactly. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wild boar croquettes from Wild van Wild

Fallen through the trapdoor at De Parade once again: Wild van Wild. Three years ago I finished off their wild boar burger, and now the wild boar croquettes are really not good either. They simply taste like beef croquettes. Nothing more. There’s nothing special about them. I can’t taste any wild boar. No wow factor, nothing. And then such an enormous dollop of mustard—you really don’t need that much. What a shame. I’m terribly sorry, but being disappointed by the quality of a fairly expensive place twice in a row is cause for concern. ⭐️⭐️
