Snackspert: Spar’s sausage roll is a huge disappointment
Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his life, suspects there is more mayonnaise than blood in his body, AND shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav. This time, he reviews Spar’s mediocre sausage roll and Vegan Junkstar’s excellent vegan cheddar sauce (known from Vegan Junkfood Bar).
Spar sausage roll
After the success of Spar’s mexicano roll and frikandel roll, expectations were high for Spar’s traditional sausage roll because, well, if that one turned out to be incredibly good too, I really wanted to crown Spar the champion of the bakery section. But unfortunately, I’m keeping the competition exciting for now, because the sausage roll is basically like all the other average sausage rolls. Of course, it’s difficult to make a simple snack fantastic, but I expected a little more. The pastry is a bit too soft, the meat is hot but unfortunately not thick enough, and when something like that has to go into your mouth, the thickness simply needs to be right. In terms of flavor, it’s still a perfectly decent sausage roll, but it’s not the winner of the day. It happens. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lentil burger from Nom Nom Nom in Amsterdam
Actually, I’m not sure I’m the right person to test these burgers, because the burgers at Nom Nom Nom in Amsterdam are apparently very healthy. Don’t come to me for that, but still, I was very curious. After all, it’s a burger. So I went for the lentil burger: one with pickles, lettuce, tomato and vegan mayonnaise. It was pretty decent; the lentil burger has a nice texture and a good salty flavor thanks to the soy sauce used. The bun, however, was disappointing; it’s too dry, which is a shame. The strange thing is that after this burger I felt particularly full; for once I didn’t feel gross and had the idea that I wouldn’t need to eat anything else for the rest of the evening. A first! So yes, once again, I’m obviously no health guru, but I was pleasantly surprised nonetheless—even though it’s not a super burger. Oh, and in the next photo you can see the mushroom burger ordered by my tablemate, but because of my nut allergy I couldn’t eat it. My partner in crime came to the same conclusion about this burger: poor bun, decent burger and remarkably filling. And not even that expensive. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Vegan cheddar sauce from Vegan Junkstar
Vegan cheddar sauce—how could that possibly end well? Appearances can be deceiving, because this might be one of the more delightful surprises of recent times. You can even still find it at Jumbo. Most supermarket cheddar sauces are just as chemical as a pond located near Tata Steel, and bear no resemblance whatsoever to the melted cheddar you get in a restaurant. But! The one from Vegan Junkstar (known from Vegan Junkfood Bar) is seriously very good. Does it taste like cheddar? Nah, not really; it does taste a little like young cheese. And it’s definitely wonderfully creamy. And! No chemical aftertaste! More lemony, which is always delicious in a sauce. A little mayo-like, lightly cheesy, absolutely spot-on. Recommended, including for the non-vegans among us. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
