Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, known in mayonnaise as Eke Bosman, tested frikandel powder to make frikandellen himself because no one else dared. Is it tasty?

We produce 600 million frikandellen a year and eat an average of around 35 per person per year. You can safely say that the frikandel is the most popular snack in our country. There are many stories about its ingredients, but we had never heard anything about powder made from sunflower seeds. Until now. The company GREENFORCE has developed frikandel in powder form. Is that a good idea?

Always enough frikandellen in stock

Last year, a genuine frikandel crisis threatened when factories faced staff shortages and snack bars had to ration the Netherlands’ most popular snack. “Why don’t we adapt the ingredients into a vegan version that’s just as tasty?” Thomas Isermann, founder of GREENFORCE, wondered. And that question led to a new product. Thomas: “Together with our research team, we developed a version of the well-known snack that matches its taste and texture. Moreover, the powder form means you can store the mix for a long time, so you always have enough frikandellen in stock.” The powder is lightweight and does not need to be refrigerated, minimizing transport emissions and energy consumption, GREENFORCE claims. Yeah, yeah, all nice words, but we mainly want to know whether it’s actually tasty. Snackspert eventually dared to try it and rolled some frikandellen in his kitchen.

Vegan frikandel powder from Greenforce

I’d had this one from Greenforce in my pantry for a while, but only dared to do something with it this weekend. Frikandel made from sunflower seeds, in powder form and packaged. How does it work? Just mix it with water and leave it in the fridge for half an hour, then shape it into frikandellen and fry them. First of all, my lazy side mainly wonders: couldn’t they simply have put ready-made vegan frikandellen on the shelves? What a chore. A frikandel exists precisely because you want to eat it quickly, not because you want to spend 45 minutes making one. But fine, there will surely be people who enjoy this. Second: kitchen novices can’t make frikandellen either; mine looked like a penis that had been lying in a freezer for 48 minutes. Hence no photo of that frikandel here, otherwise I’ll get banned from Instagram. Look, the idea is genuinely admirable and the concept has potential, but it’s not really a success yet. The texture of the frikandel is honestly good, but the taste is disappointing. A bit cardboard-like, and you don’t want that. So yes, back to the drawing board, because the most important thing about a product is its taste—and producers sometimes forget that. What a shame! ⭐️⭐️
