Snackspert’s week: ‘This is Enjoyment with a capital E, courtesy of Guus Meeuwis’

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his life, suspects he has more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week.

Better than pleasure
Snacking at Pompet
- Patatje boeuf
- De mitraillette
- Bitterballen
Let me start by saying that I’m a huge fan of the Hotmamahot collective (they provide festival catering, among other things, and also have restaurants), so I was in a cheerful mood all day because I was going to visit their French-inspired establishment Pompet in Amsterdam-Noord. Because just look at this: doesn’t it look like a fairy tale that ends even more beautifully than Beauty and the Beast? Let me start with the very best item on the drinks menu (also available as dinner!): patatje boeuf. Yes, we’re used to patatje stoof, but the French version combined with andalouse sauce is—here it comes—perhaps simply much tastier. The fries are wonderfully crispy, the meat has so many flavors that you can still remember them a week later, and the sauce is an excellent choice. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Next up: the mitraillette, with merguez sausages, fries, and andalouse sauce once again. The last time I ate it at Lowlands (2017, I believe), it was bigger and the baguette tasted fresher too. That doesn’t mean the rest is disappointing, though, because the meat and fries are top-notch. Truly top-notch. Enjoyment with a capital E, courtesy of Guus Meeuwis. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

And yes, the bitterballen; in my opinion, they come from manufacturer De Bourgondiër, and I’m personally a huge fan because these balls are made with shredded beef. A favorite! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pringles Rice fusion – Malaysian Red Curry

Let me say this right away: it feels a little strange, because this is the third rice chip flavor from Pringles I’ve tested, and I already gave the tikka masala flavor 5 stars. I gave the BBQ teriyaki flavor a critical 3 stars, but the next flavor, red curry, has left my head spinning. Because this one is insanely delicious. Again. It’s not that I’m a huge fan of red curry—I certainly like it—but this bag of chips was gone within fifteen minutes. Because they were that delicious. I’m considering giving it 5 stars again, because I know few chip flavors with such a good, refined, and powerful taste. But is it just me? Maybe it’s my personal taste, and many other people might find it less delicious. It’s like someone asking you what rating you’d give your sex life, and of course you don’t give it a failing grade but a solid 10 because you’re the devil. No, just kidding, I genuinely want to recommend that everyone try these and honestly say whether they’re really worth 5 stars. Look at the price-quality ratio, compare them with other chips in that price range, and so on. I’m curious. I like being right because hey, who’s the Snackspert here, you or me?? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cheese sticks from Lidl

Cheese sticks are absolutely fantastic when you’re sitting on a terrace, so delicious with chili sauce, and you know you can sing along to a song like Het is een Nacht without getting annoyed. Unfortunately, Lidl’s cheese sticks from its Delicieux line are better suited to a concert by Kensington because, goodness me, what a mess. I love Lidl, but as far as I’m concerned, they can dump these sticks. Why? Nothing. But. Dough. The old cheese flavor is there, but you really have to search for it. They’re thin, tasteless, and so on. I can think of ten reasons why going to the dentist is more fun than eating this, but I’ll hold back for now. You can skip these. Please do. Sorry, dear people at Lidl. ⭐️
