So happy with the new supermarket that people are doing the conga
The residents of the North Brabant village of Reek are so overjoyed that an Aldi has opened in their village that they are doing the conga through the streets, accompanied by a brass band and balloons. It took years, but finally residents can shop locally again.
Reek is a small village with nearly 1,700 residents. The village had been without a supermarket for ages, much to the residents’ dismay. It’s rather inconvenient when you have to get on your bike for a forgotten bottle of coffee creamer and organize an expedition for your weekly groceries. So when Aldi announced that it wanted to open a store in the village, everyone was relieved. Unfortunately, objections from Albert Heijn and Jumbo in nearby villages caused major delays.
Boycotting the supermarket
An action committee in the village refused to let the matter rest. Residents boycotted the protesting supermarkets, went to a Plus supermarket a little farther away, and continued lobbying persistently for a supermarket in the village. After years of wrangling, lawsuits, construction stoppages and conflict, a decision was reached: Aldi may open a supermarket in the village temporarily, for five years. The residents are so happy about it that they did the conga through the village to the supermarket.
‘Overwhelming’
The director of the brand-new Aldi in Reek doesn’t know what’s hit him. ‘The way we have been welcomed by the residents is truly unique,’ he tells Omroep Brabant. ‘It’s overwhelming.’
