7 Great Inventions for the Supermarket
The first Dutch supermarket opened in Nijmegen in 1946, and by now it’s almost impossible to imagine what life would be like without the supermarket. Still, it can always be better, as these photos show. Dear Albert Heijn, we want these too: a car wash for shopping carts and a tap for detergent. Can we have that? Please?
Honestly: the supermarket is a brilliant invention. You stroll anonymously through the store, throw everything you fancy into your basket, pick up whatever is on your list along the way, and at the checkout you even get stamps, or mini vegetable gardens, or other stuff. If you don’t feel like looking anyone in the eye or being social at all, you can even scan your own groceries at one of those self-checkouts. So although you might think it can’t get any better, we found a few supermarket innovations from other countries online that made us think: why don’t we have these yet?
