Caught: woman ‘forgets’ to scan more than 300 euros’ worth of groceries

Are you happy with those self-checkout machines at the supermarket? Grocery shopping feels a bit like laser tag because of that scanner gun: you beep everything as you load it (or let the kids do it), and you don’t have to queue at the checkout. But I do wonder whether all shoppers are that honest. This woman was rather casual about it: when checked, 364 euros’ worth of groceries were missing from her receipt.

A self-checkout operates on the assumption that everyone scans everything honestly and properly. And sometimes you may be checked, if that red flashing light at the gates starts blaring or if a store employee doesn’t quite trust you… A 29-year-old woman from Harlingen had skipped rather more while scanning than a pack of matches or a carton of milk: the difference between her receipt and what she had actually loaded into the cart was no less than 364 euros.
Not a mistake
What? How? How on earth do you end up with that total? Does it all fit in a shopping cart? Fortunately, AD has all the details, right down to a photo of the receipt. It’s clear to see: the woman had paid 142.42, but when a checkout employee added up the entire load again, they arrived at 506.25. She hadn’t beeped more than 364 euros’ worth of items. You can’t exactly call that a little mistake…
Yokidrink? Why?
When I look at her receipt, I understand absolutely nothing anymore. If you’re planning to steal big from the supermarket—which she had apparently worked at for a while too—why put yokidrink, muffin mix and Nibbit chips in your cart? Anyone who has ever fantasized about one minute of free shopping knows you need to hit the drinks aisle, or the supermarket’s beauty aisle, to really cash in. Would you be able to find the ten most expensive groceries in the supermarket like that?
Mastermind
In any case, this woman turned out not to be a criminal mastermind, since she was caught red-handed with a fully loaded cart full of stolen goods. She still had to pay for the missing groceries, received a hefty fine and is not allowed to enter that store for the next two years. Fortunately, she stocked up on enough muffin mix and yoghurt drinks to get through that period.
