You’ll want to try this sandwich: Hotdoctopus to-go

If there’s one thing corona has taught us, it’s the simple fact that, despite everything, we experience huge moments of happiness from really delicious food. And thanks to that same corona, it’s often takeaway food. Food that you can easily devour on the go, because sitting somewhere isn’t an option with all those damn lockdowns. So we eat a lot while walking, or in the car. Like the Hotdoctopus to-go from ceviche bar Sjefietshe: one of the most extraordinary sandwiches I’ve eaten in a long time.

Hotdog meets pulpo
Sjefietshe’s motto during corona times: ‘Don’t freak-out, just take-out!‘ In South America, ceviche al paso (ceviche to-go) has long been part of the street-food culture. So now that the friendly Sjefietshe in Amsterdam’s Pijp is closed, they have, like many hospitality entrepreneurs, turned to takeaway and delivery.
The idea and name behind the Hotdoctopus sandwich are simply brilliant: hotdog meets pulpo! Instead of a hotdog, a brioche bun contains a perfectly cooked octopus tentacle, covered in an irresistible sauce, with some chives and pickle. The result is a sandwich so delicious you’ll want to eat your fingers along with it!
Do ask for extra napkins, because it isn’t easy to eat, on the go – especially when the wind is blowing the wrong way – and you’ll end up with more sauce in your hair and on your coat than on your sandwich. And make sure you have some toothpicks too, because those tentacles effortlessly find their way between your teeth and molars.
Believe me, you want this
It isn’t cheap, but it is both special and exceptionally delicious! The Hotdoctopus to-go costs 14 euros and is sold every Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. through Sjefietshe’s to-go window.
