Sommelier in the sky

The Australian airline Qantas offers wine tastings. Not at the airport, but during your flight. And not just for business and first class passengers, but for everyone. That suddenly makes that long, boring flight towards Down Under a lot more appealing.

The airline hired six sommeliers who, together, must ensure that the more than two thousand stewards and stewardesses will soon be able to tell you all about Australia’s finest when it comes to wine.

Nice idea, but does a sky-high tasting like this actually make sense?

Your sense of taste changes enormously when you’re on an airplane. Salt and herbs don’t taste nearly as strong, and you also smell much less during a flight. And when you consider that eighty percent of our taste is determined by smell, you may wonder whether it makes sense to hold such a tasting while flying. Our advice? Just do it (there are worse ways to pass the time), but don’t be tempted to order a few boxes for home.
