Starting out as a dishwasher in hospitality; this would be the moment
If you started working as a dishwasher in hospitality in the past, you probably didn’t do it because it paid particularly well. Of course, sharing in the tips was a nice bonus, as was enjoying food and drinks ‘on the house’, but the wages themselves probably weren’t particularly generous. These days, things are slightly different…
Because staff shortages have made the situation in hospitality extremely urgent, there has been a huge increase in the hourly wages businesses are willing to pay. This applies to hospitality itself, but also to the logistics services around it, such as bicycle couriers. The highest wages ever can be earned in that latter category (an average of €15.33 per hour), but you can also make a pretty good amount of cash as a dishwasher these days.
Expensive dishwater
A hospitality business recently offered an hourly wage of €19.55 for a dishwasher shift as a temporary worker on a platform for flexible work. The platform in question, Youbahn, reports this. Businesses can adjust the hourly wages they offer at any time until someone accepts the job.
The statutory minimum hourly wage for someone aged 21 or older is currently €9.82 per hour based on a 40-hour week. Due to the scale of staff shortages in many sectors, those prices are therefore rising enormously. The highest bidder
People looking for a shift or a job can easily wait for hourly wages to rise because of that variable offering; the dishwasher shift that was advertised for €19.55 and attracted 21 responses at the time received only two responses when the hourly wage was previously €13.22.
Youbahn CEO Ard Huininga expects ‘shortages in several sectors, such as logistics, to increase even further’, partly because, for example, ‘restaurants will expand their lunch options during the holidays since they have to keep their doors closed in the evenings.’
