Surinamese in Utrecht at Sweetie

No energy left to cook? We get it. But delicious food is a must, so never settle for less. That’s why we’ve put together our tips for truly delicious takeaway meals, the best delivery services and affordable places.

Knowing a good place to get roti is a must. For me, that place is Chinese-Surinamese restaurant Sweetie. Although the restaurant is tucked away in a side street in the city centre, it’s often packed, and I completely understand why. Personally, the interior doesn’t really invite me to sit down for a meal, but whenever I want takeaway, I always go for the roti from this place. The advantage is that, besides roti, you can also get lots of other delicious dishes. So if you’re in the mood for something different, you can easily come here too.
Sweetie vs. Rosita
Anyone from Utrecht knows that many people swear by Rosita, but I remain loyal to Sweetie’s generous portions. The difference is that the roti there has a sweet, mildly spicy flavour, with sambal to taste, whereas at Rosita the roti is already quite hot on its own.
Roti
At Sweetie, € 10.50 gets you a generous portion. If you order an extra flatbread—the roti pancake—for € 2.50 and upgrade your portion of roti to a ‘super’ for an additional € 1, you’ll have enough for two people. If you fancy something different, you can also choose beef, lamb, prawns or salted cod. Besides roti, they also serve many other dishes from the Surinamese kitchen. Think pom, bakabana, brown beans with salted meat and moksi meti.
