Taste test: Albert Heijn’s Champagne sorbet
Albert Heijn has gone all out again this year with its Excellence range: there’s really everything on offer for the holidays. I noticed a striking amount of vegetarian food at my Albert Heijn. A ready-made Beet Wellington, vegetarian prawn cocktail and even vegan foie gras… But I decided to do things the other way around, because instead of starting with the starters, I began with the desserts. They have lots of options there now too, such as Champagne sorbet, and I simply had to test it.
Because Champagne sorbet naturally sounds amazing — but is it?

My ID wasn’t checked at checkout, but it could certainly happen to you, because this sorbet really does contain alcohol. Only 1.2 percent, admittedly, but still good to know. I actually wanted to glide through life alcohol-free until Christmas, but I sinned — although I thought this was a perfectly good excuse to play a very small wild card.
And it’s just as well that I tasted it, because things almost went wrong.
Champagne sorbet: what does it taste like?
Sniffing the Champagne sorbet, I thought: oh no. It smells quite intensely of champagne, and I wasn’t entirely convinced that was good news. As much as I love alcohol, I don’t really like the taste of alcohol in my food. To be honest, I feared the worst: a chemical, artificial taste like you can also get with truffle oil. But nothing could be further from the truth: this sorbet is really, really delicious. It’s very fresh, you can barely taste the alcohol, and it tastes like champagne, but not too strongly.
Final verdict: 8.5 out of 10, so definitely worth grabbing from the shelf. You don’t have to let the price put you off either; for €2.99, you get half a litre.
