Tequilas from a badass maestra tequilera: you’ll want to taste them!

When we say ‘tequila!’ a few things might happen to you: either you immediately think back, braying with pleasure, to the last party where the margaritas helped make it an absolutely fantastic night, or your eyebrows knit together above your wrinkled nose as you remember the low point when you found yourself doubled over the toilet bowl. (Something else is of course possible too.) Either way: if you drink tequila, drink good tequila!

Because poor-quality tequila probably doesn’t just leave you feeling miserable; it’s no fun for the earth either. For bulk tequila, agave plants are generally treated with pesticides and herbicides, planted over and over as a monoculture, and harvested every two or three years. No, then there’s this aromatic new tequila, which is also produced under the watchful eye of a master tequila maker, a maestra tequilera…
Small and exceptionally fine
Mijenta Tequila is a small Mexican brand that prides itself on producing very high-quality tequila with consideration for the environment and the people around them. They are now bringing two tequilas to the Dutch market, bottling them unfiltered to preserve their unique flavor. You can really taste the ‘terroir’ of the soil, which gives the drink a specific flavor profile (just as it does with wine).
Community entrepreneurship
Master distiller Ana Maria Romero selects the best plants with her professional team of jimadores (agave farmers)—they are only harvested after seven or eight years—and cooks and ferments their hearts. The residents of the surrounding Jalisco region then help fill, number, and label the bottles. Farm to table, so to speak! The name Mijenta is derived from mi gente: my people.

From smooth to spicy
We got to taste Mijenta’s Tequila Blanco and Tequila Reposado: the blanco is a smooth, ‘calm’ tequila, while the reposado is complex and full-bodied, with a kick and hints of bergamot and cacao. Very special. From September, the exclusive Añejo Gran Reserva will also be available in the Netherlands. And if we may impress one more rule upon you: shots are really out of the question. Sip these tequilas calmly or use them in a good cocktail, because they are too exclusive to knock back.
Drinking Mijenta neat
Where can you find Mijenta? At the hospitality venues of Soho House and the Entourage Group, at the fantastic cocktail bar Flying Dutchmen in Amsterdam (close to the station, so you can catch a train home again if necessary), at the shops of Sterk, Barrelproof Boutique, De Gouden Ton, and online at drankdozijn.nl and caneandgrain.nl. Prices from € 52,90. And here’s how to prevent that tequila hangover!
