Tesla surprises us once again with a remarkable release: Tesla tequila

In the ‘remarkable stories’ series today: a car brand launching spirits. Uh, what? Like giving a toddler a chainsaw as a present (you can, technically, but why would you)? Or are we expecting an awful lot from the self-driving capabilities of the car in question?

I basically write about food and drinks and don’t know much about cars, so correct me where necessary. But it’s surely not really the case that Tesla drivers press the ‘just drive me home’ button, recline the seat horizontally and, after an hour of lounging, snacking and drinking like a bona fide Roman, get dropped off at home while the car drives itself, is it?
Tesla Tequila
Or have I missed something? So why would you, as a car brand, want to be associated with knocking back shots at the bar? I know, I know, that’s disrespectful to the beautiful drink that tequila can truly be, and which, fortunately, can also be found at an increasing number of good taquerias in the Netherlands. Tequila the way it should be. You sip it, just as you would a refined whiskey.
Sold out
But what Tesla founder Elon Musk has managed to do once again, at least, is cause a bit of a stir. The Tesla tequila, made by the Nosotros Tequila distillery in Southern California and bottled in a lightning-bolt-shaped bottle (okay, pretty cool), could be ordered in America for $250—and sold out within a day! The idea is presumably that the tequila is simply enjoyed neatly at home, straight or in a tasty tequila cocktail when you have no intention of going anywhere at all, but still. Weird. Tesla drivers themselves, what do you think? Good idea, and would you want a bottle like that in your home in a flash? Or should cars and alcohol remain strictly separate, including from a marketing perspective?
