Tested: Mora’s new rendang bitterballen
Mora fans still remember it like it was yesterday—and rendang lovers do too: the launch of Mora’s rendang kroketten. In 2019, it was a big deal in snackland. Yet the product didn’t stay on supermarket shelves for long; some time later, it was nowhere to be found. Mora is making it up to us now with rendang bitterballen. Is this the snack we’ve been eagerly waiting for all this time, or will this disappear from the shelves in no time too?
Rendang is one of the most iconic and beloved dishes in Indonesian cuisine. It’s true Indonesian comfort food: tender, melt-in-your-mouth stewed meat cooked in a spicy sauce with flavorings such as coconut milk, lemongrass and ginger. You can make it yourself in all kinds of variations. You can make it the traditional way with beef, but you can also get to work with eggplant or jackfruit, for example. Even rendang with mussels is possible.
Tested: Mora’s rendang bitterballen
If anyone can give a reliable review of Mora’s new rendang bitterballen, it’s Snackspert (@snackspert). About five years ago, he also tested the rendang kroketten from the same brand. Are the rendang bitterballen better, worse or just as good as the rendang kroketten?
”Finally! Mora’s rendang kroketten were actually pretty good (I gave them the full three stars in 2019), but disappeared from supermarkets after a while. The well-known snack manufacturer clearly hasn’t been sitting still, because you can now find their rendang bitterballen in several supermarkets. I think this one is a lot better than the previous edition, and that’s because it’s more heavily seasoned. There are a few downsides, but they don’t have much impact on the final verdict. It could be a lot creamier, and I wouldn’t mind a little more sambal, but other than that I’m pleasantly surprised. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”

The Gerard Joling of snacks
An improvement, then. Snackspert sums it up perfectly: ”It’s a bit like the Gerard Joling of snacks: always fun to have around”. Drive us crazy, Mora! A few more minor improvements and our new favorite on the snack platter will be born.
One small critical sidenote from us: a box of 12 bitterballen costs €4.49 at Albert Heijn. We find that pretty pricey. You can still be the Gerard Joling of snacks; but when Geer asks a fortune for a performance, we also scratch our heads three times.
