Tested: the one and only Chocomel Plant-based

Would you love to drink ‘the one and only’ Chocomel but prefer not to have cow’s milk? Then your prayers have been answered, because the classic in the yellow carton is now also available in a plant-based version: Chocomel plant-based. What does it taste like? We put it to the test.

According to producer FrieslandCampina, it took some searching to get the flavour ‘full-bodied’ enough, but according to a very large majority of the test panels, they have now succeeded.

Cashew and pea
The plant-based milk Chocomel plant-based is made from is based on cashew and pea, and if that doesn’t sound delicious: don’t worry, they definitely add enough sugar and cocoa. 97% of the tasters on the flavour panel indicated that the new version meets the high taste expectations, meaning that Chocomel lovers who would rather (occasionally) skip dairy can still sport a beautiful chocolate-milk moustache.
What we thought of Chocomel plant-based
Naturally, we also subjected this new version to a very rigorous assessment, together with the most critical tasters there are: children! Personally, I found the vegan Chocomel sweet, but incredibly close to the cow’s-milk version. It is also slightly less creamy, but in return the chocolate flavour is just as full. Personally, I would have no problem choosing the plant-based version instead of the cow’s-milk version.
And the children, three of them to be precise, found it delicious. “Nice and sweet, and it really tastes like chocolate,” they said. They could taste that it wasn’t made from cow’s milk, but two out of the three didn’t mind because it is “so sweet and chocolatey”, while the third generally prefers plant-based milk to cow’s milk anyway. This taster actually found Chocomel plant-based creamy.
Buying Chocomel plant-based
Chocomel plant-based is already available via grocery delivery service Picnic, and from mid-October at all supermarket chains. And we’re curious what the millions of people who think that chocolate milk comes from brown cows will think this comes from!
