Tested: this is the tastiest (and grossest!) sugary supermarket donut
Donuts, we love ‘m. Our favorite is available in various types. But we’re curious: which supermarket sells the tastiest old school sugary donut? And which one should you give a wide berth? We smell, taste and assess thoroughly: ‘It looks as if this one has been sitting in the store for 3 days.’
The sugary donuts were all bought and eaten on the same day (and stored in the same way). Almost all donuts cost €0.35 each, except the one from Jumbo; there, you pay €0.51 for 1 donut. At Aldi, Lidl, Vomar and Jumbo, you can buy a single donut; at Albert Heijn, you pay €1.75 for 5 donuts, and at Dirk €0.70 for 2. (That works out at €0.35 each).
Rounder, thicker
All donuts are tasted ‘blind’, meaning that only the note-taker knows which donut comes from which store. The donuts already look different at first glance. The Albert Heijn donut is slightly darker than the others, while the Aldi one is perfectly round. The Aldi and Vomar donuts also look somewhat thicker. According to the test panel, the most appealing donuts are those from Aldi and Vomar: ‘they’re nice and thick and look perfect.’
Too dry
When tasting it, the Aldi one is disappointing: ‘it could use more sugar, the texture is nice, but it has little flavor,’ says Bas. And another complaint: ‘The donut is a little too compact and on the dry side.’ Quickly moving on to number 2 from Lidl, ‘clearly more flavor than number 1,’ says Lynn. Bas is happy with the amount of sugar on top of this donut: ‘a lovely layer of sugar, exactly how it should be on a donut.’
Appearance versus taste
According to the test panel, donut number 3—from Albert Heijn—is a typical case of ‘never judge a book by its cover’; it doesn’t look particularly impressive, but the taste, on the other hand…’There’s some kind of syrup on it, which makes this donut deliciously moist,’ says Lynn. Bas: ‘The appearance may be less impressive, but the taste is top-notch.’
The test panel is really not impressed by the Dirk donut: ‘It looks as if this one has been sitting in the store for 3 days,’ says Bas. Lynn doesn’t have much good to say about this donut either: ‘It resembles a dry bread roll more than a donut.’ So Dirk has some work to do. The Jumbo donut has a distinctive flavor. Bas and Lynn unanimously agree: ‘This donut has an oliebollen aftertaste’ and: ‘A real oily aftertaste.’
The winner
Conclusion: especially for those few pennies, all the donuts are okay, but the flavors really are different. According to the test panel, the Albert Heijn and Vomar donuts were very closely matched. But there can only be one winner, and that is the Albert Heijn donut. This is ‘the perfect donut—sweet, flavorful and moist.’ It’s nice that you buy it in packs of 5 right away.
The loser
That is the Dirk donut. ‘Extremely dry, and you can’t taste the sugar at all.’
