Tested: this is the very best pizza bread from the supermarket

If you’re in the mood for pizza but 1) can’t manage a whole one or 2) don’t have an oven nearby, pizza bread is the ideal compromise. Eating it straight out of your hand still gives you the feeling that your pizza craving is being satisfied. That is, if it tastes reasonably good, of course. In that respect, we naturally trust just one expert: Snackspert. He tested pizza breads from various supermarkets and rated them on taste. Which one is the best?

The selection of test material was a little smaller this time than, for example, in Snackspert’s bapao or garlic sauce test. There simply was more choice in supermarkets in those cases. When Eke (you’d almost forget that’s his real name) tested frikandel rolls from the supermarket, he collected six from six different supermarkets. He ended up with the same number in the pizza-bread-from-the-supermarket test. Six snacks, then. Which one would you serve at your pizza (bread) party?
Six pizza breads from six supermarkets
Snackspert immediately explains himself at the start of his test. Yes, it’s possible that your local supermarket wasn’t included, he says. Eke visited as many supermarkets as possible, but Hoogvliet, for example, isn’t anywhere near him. Plus, Aldi and Spar didn’t have pizza bread in their range at all. Just so you know. The supermarkets that were included in Snackspert’s test are: Albert Heijn, Jumbo, Lidl, Plus, DekaMarkt and Dirk.
Top 6 Snackspert’s pizza bread test
Was it really a feast for Snackspert in the pizza bread test? No. Overall, he wasn’t wildly enthusiastic about what he tasted. Even about the winner, Eke said that he ‘isn’t going to open the window (of his car) now and scream with joy at the top of his lungs’. So who is this winner?

1. Lidl: really good dough, good combination of flavors
2. Plus: lots of flavor thanks to the red onion, but somewhat chewy
3. Albert Heijn: tasty dough, but the bell pepper flavor is too dominant
4. Jumbo: good balance between bell pepper and tomato, but lacks onion
5. DekaMarkt: little flavor; you mainly taste bell pepper and hardly any tomato or mozzarella
6. Dirk: good cheese, but simple in terms of flavor
One viewer of the test has a very good question: ‘Why are they so damn terrible???’ Snackspert does know the answer: ‘cheap ingredients’. Completely true, of course, because that simply means a lack of quality. That’s why fresh pizzas from good pizzerias taste so much better than frozen, cheap junk.
Better suggestions
The comments do include a few suggestions for genuinely delicious pizza breads. Apparently, you should go to Hoogvliet for the ‘pepperoni focaccia or the mozzarella tomato focaccia, from the fresh food section!!!’ Albert Heijn’s pizza donut is also mentioned. Maybe it isn’t a pizza bread, but in terms of taste it is supposedly a better choice. Or do you have another suggestion? We’d love to hear it!
