Snackspert tests 11 garlic sauces: this is the winner
Garlic sauce. The hero of the barbecue, the king of your sandwich döner, kebab, gyros and shawarma. Of course, homemade garlic sauce tastes best. But which supermarket garlic sauce is a real winner? Snackspert bought 11 of them and bravely spooned his way through them. Brave, yes, because good grief, what a disappointment it turned out to be.
Snackspert, our go to when it comes to the best snack tips, recently released a sensational burger – a Korean Fried Chicken Burger, that is. It brought him a lot more joy than tasting 11 garlic sauces.
Garlic sauce test
To quote Snackspert: most of them were terrible; actually, none of them was truly the best. Still, he made a list ranking them from number 1 to number 11. So at least you won’t make the absolute worst choice in the supermarket aisle.
Notably, two garlic sauces are missing from the test. The famous garlic sauce from former supermarket DEEN, which – hallelujah – was added to the range after the takeover by Albert Heijn. Snackspert visited three Albert Heijn stores, but this acclaimed garlic sauce was nowhere to be found. Hopefully you’ll have more luck at your Albert Heijn store.
Bieze garlic sauce is also missing from the test. You know the one: the garlic sauce that takes shrinkflation to a whole new level, as became clear from consumer program Radar’s shrinkflation election ‘Who has the smallest one?’. Previously, you paid 75 cents for 250 grams of sauce. These days, a smaller 170-gram tub costs almost twice as much, namely €1.49!
The top 11
1. G’woon: definitely tasty, contains the most garlic
2. Yildriz: this one even contains a chili pepper, very pleasant
3. Aldi: very good, also contains a little more garlic
4. Jumbo: meh, but certainly not the worst
5. Gouda’s Glorie: too creamy, more like garlic mayonnaise
6. Albert Heijn: nice, fresh flavor, but quickly veers toward yogurt
7. Calvé: has little to do with garlic, tastes like mustard
8. Remia: this is more yogurt than garlic sauce
9. Lidl: no squeeze bottle and much more of a salad dressing than a garlic sauce
10. Mister Kitchen: vegan and far too much lemon juice
11. Callowfit: also vegan and far too watery. Really bad!
