Tested: UNA grill

UNA-BBQ-2017

We previously wrote about the UNA grill. A compact charcoal BBQ that you can easily take to the park and simply put in the dishwasher at home. Time for a test, according to FavorFlav.

Friends called up, the perfect park selected (my favorite: Erasmuspark in Amsterdam West) and, of course, plenty of food. Time for the first test: how convenient is the Una to take along on a bicycle?

Well, very easy indeed. It isn’t super light (3.7 kilos), but for someone who is 1.53 meters tall it’s perfectly manageable, so it will probably be fine for you too. Once in the park, the BBQ is ready in no time and all that’s left is to light the coals.

Crispy and tender

First up are the lamb chops, because everyone is craving those the most. Simply marinated at home in some olive oil, thyme, garlic and lemon. The grill is very hot and the chops sear quickly. After a few minutes they’re ready: crispy on the outside and still beautifully pink inside.

What else goes on: merguez sausages, spicy burgers, corn on the cob, halloumi and mint peppers. The halloumi remains a tricky one. The grill is blazing hot, so before you know it that golden-brown exterior is black. It’s better to wait until the end, when the grill is less hot.

Smoky

I would definitely put the peppers and tomatoes on when the grill is still blazing hot, because that makes them wonderfully smoky and blackens the outside. Incredibly delicious with just a little pepper and salt.

Once we’ve finished eating, we stay in the park for a while longer, because the beer isn’t finished yet. When I finally head home, the UNA has cooled down and we put it back together again in no time. On the bike, home and cleaning. That doesn’t take much work either.

Ideal

Really, this is the BBQ for me. It takes up hardly any space, it’s ideal for a dinner for two on my small city balcony, and it’s almost too easy to use in the park. And it looks really beautiful too.
