September 12 (2016) was the 121st birthday of the ‘inventor’ of Japanese fake food. And Google celebrated that on its homepage with a Doodle. An adapted logo for one day in honor of a memorable event.

Thanks to Takizo Iwasaki, plastic, vinyl or wax fake food has adorned the windows of virtually every Japanese eatery for almost a century. ‘Sampuru’ is the name of the craft that has since grown into a huge business in Japan. That is why Google honored the King of Fake Foods with a Doodle that could be seen in Iwasaki’s homeland Japan and in Taiwan, South Korea, Portugal, Sweden and Iceland.

Also check out this video, which immediately shows you how all that fake food is made.
