The best food at Schiphol
You arrive at Schiphol with all your suitcases, wagging like an excited puppy because you’re going on holiday! But damn, now your stomach starts rumbling and, with all the excitement, you didn’t make any sandwiches at home. Where are you supposed to eat?
It’s not easy. If you’re not careful, you’ll soon find yourself chewing on a nasty factory-made sandwich, hamburger or lukewarm pizza, while having just paid €15 for a ‘meal’. That meal consists of one of the aforementioned snacks and a mini bottle of water. Score! Not. It takes a little searching, but at these places you do get your money’s worth.
Leon
Whenever I’m going on holiday somewhere in Europe, I always make a pit stop at Leon for a wrap with falafel and a superfood salad. That superfood salad sounds very fit-girl, but it’s so delicious! With broccoli, avocado, cucumber, feta and fresh herbs, I even looked up the recipe and make it at home very often. Anyhow, the chain specialises in ‘naturally fast food’, and besides my usual order, you can also get Lebanese mezze, lamb kebab, Caesar salad and Moroccan or Sicilian meatballs.
HEMA
Since you’re about to go without your familiar Dutch comfort food for a week, two or three, you’d better pick up a tasty smoked sausage at the airport. Or a hot dog, a sausage roll or a tompouce. HEMA has it all at a HEMA price.
Pizza at Per Tutti
I wouldn’t try the pasta or risotto here, but the pizza at Per Tutti is quite reasonable by airport standards. The base is thin and crispy and much better than those square, pre-cut slices you see elsewhere at Schiphol. And no, it’s not cheap, but you have to eat something.
McDonald’s
If all else fails: McDonald’s. You may be strongly opposed to it, but McDonald’s puts exactly enough fat, sugar and salt in everything everywhere to make everyone like it. It’s science. The Big Mac tastes the same everywhere, and abroad they don’t have Dutch-style fries sauce anywhere, so you’d better order that meal on Dutch soil.
